Homeowners -Before heading out for holidays, be sure to “turn it off”

During the many years that I spent as a Mechanical Contractor, I always dreaded getting the emergency call, where a Home Owner would come home after an extended vacation and find 3 feet of water in there basement.  It’s a perfect way to bring back the stress in a hurry!  Before setting your security alarm and locking the door, be sure to turn off your main water valve and set your gas fired water heater to the vacation setting.  If  you are going away during the winter months, do not lower the house thermostat any lower that 15C.  I would also recommend that you have a good friend or relative check your home every 2-3 days.  Some insurance companies now demand a visitor drop by on a regular basis while you are out of town .  It would also be a good idea as well to make sure all your rain-water downspouts are dropped down and extended at least 6 ft from the house, during the rainy season, which will soohn be upon us, and ensure that your sump pump is fully functional . Just takes a few extra  minutes before you close the door …I guarantee it will save you a pile of stress when you return .
