Post Election Day in Calgary

Wed, 23 Oct by Ken MacAulay

Really good to see  Mayor Nenshi get re-elected in our fair city . After the flood in June and the way in which he represented himself we all knew he was a shoo-in .The surprise of the night I believe for me anyway was Jon Mar the long time ward -8 councillor lost his seat to  Evan Woolley.

This should be am interesting 4 years , hopefully we can get ” secondary suites ” passed in the areas of the city that should have them .

Hopefully the ” developers / Builders ” and Nenshi can mend some fences and get the Calgary New Home issue put to bed . Maybe we can see some new ideas from both parties on sustainable housing ideas for our city and not the same 1600- 2500 square foot , zero lot line home with a double attached garage on the front of it .We must up our densities and build better homes .. I know we can .

We should all get behind this effort maybe the city will take the ear plugs out and listen to the people of this great city . There are many great minds in this city with amazing ideas to make YYC Better !

After The Flood of 2013

Thu, 10 Oct by Ken MacAulay

Do you think the municipalities and the province will tighten up the building practices from the lessons learned of the flood of 2013 or will they toss the file on the shelf ? Hopefully they take a look at how we can improve in the re-building of places like High River , Elbow Park , Bowness and others .

The people of Southern Alberta need some clear direction , backed up by science and sound building practises that are being used in other parts of the world that have suffered similar tragedies oin the past New Orleans

You Gotta Like Mike Holmes !

Another eye opening  evening listening to Mike Holmes at the Telus Convention Centre, His no nonsense talk touched on the recent flooding in YYC all the way to talking to a gal from my home town who is now the head of Home Depot in Canada … telling her you have to stop selling JUNK! As you may guess that did not go over well…

He explain to the audience how a flooded home that had water over the first floor is a tear down …all the way to… how to lift a 100 year old home and replace the foundation were questions from floor …

Mike also explained on who is running the building code in Canada .. the developers and builders.. not the government … with reps from the CHBA in attendance with booths in the foyer …  he is blunt and tells it like it is… he said he will die trying to get people to listen and build better ..

Alberta is looking to make it easier and quicker for condo owners to deal with everyday issues instead of winding up in a lengthy court procedure.

This will be great if the province follows though with this tribunal … I will be curious to see who sits on this panel … Bernie Winter Of Condo Check would make a terrific panel member …

Hopefully it will have the stroke to make a difference as many condo boards pay huge to fight for their unit owners … ask the owners of Elbow Valley West who dropped 300K to get …. nowhere …. one positive step at a time !
